A healthy attitude in the mind is essential for a healthy body! This is true because the mind and body operate in harmony with each other. They are indivisible, as we state in the "Pledge of Allegiance.""I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United State of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
This fact of indivisibility applies to the birthing of a baby, to the recuperative processes after surgery, to the emotional overeating of the obese, and to the addiction of nicotine.
Victor Frankl, a psychologist who survived the Holocaust, described in his book, Man's Search For Meaning, how those with positive, optimistic attitudes and mental images of survival did better in the horrific circumstances of the camps than those who did not have them. They not only survived, but also thrived in life, eventually.
Before surgery or the birthing of your baby, you may become frightened of the prospects of the operation or delivery. It may be your first time to have surgery. It may be your first-born. Or, you may have had a negative experience in the past that deters you from moving forward towards recovery. The worries wear you down. You can't sleep. You are so scared you can't even think about what to do.
The fears you have may be built up in your mind to such an extent that they are blocking you. These fears may prevent the natural ability of the body to heal, because tension in the mind produces tension in the body and vice versa.
Sometimes, as human beings, we develop social habits as coping mechanisms, like smoking or overeating, and unless we question the usefulness of these habits, at some time in the future, we may find ourselves in unhealthy conditions. We smoke too much, eat in excess, and develop an illness-maintenance attitude that prevents us from moving past our hurts and pains. Then we develop high blood pressure from the stressors of life or diabetes or lung cancer...but it may be too late to reverse the damage.
Do you have any of the following challenges that present obstacles for you?
- Pre- and post-natal jitters
- pre- and post-operative fears
- Pre- and post-dental frights
- Difficulty sleeping
- Overeating
- Smoking
- Chronic pain

If the answer is YES to any of the above, are you ready to do something about it? Are you ready to learn how to help yourself toward the pursuit of health and happiness?
